People of all ages and across all cultures experience play. It is an important activity that children do, to learn about themselves, others and the world around them. Play is recognized as a human right and is essential for a child's optimal growth and development. Pure play awakens the joyful, creative spirit in us all.
Play Around the World (PAW) is an inter-cultural service learning course offered by the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. Students from a variety of disciplines volunteer approximately 32 hours per week for 12 weeks where they gain valuable life skills, and broaden their worldview, living and working in a culture different from their own. Student teams will serve in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Cusco, Peru at organizations such as schools for children with impairments, orphanages and social agencies. Students will be facilitating play, recreation and sport in a variety of contexts and focus on the protection, promotion and provision of the Child's Right to Play (Article 31 UNCRC). Funds raised will enable students to participate and will directly benefit the agencies PAW serves. Thank you for visiting this campaign site and for your interest in Play Around the World.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the support you have shown our team throughout this USEED campaign, and for the many other ways you have and continue to support us. We are grateful that we reached (and even exceeded) our goal toward this valuable opportunity to protect, provide and promote every Child's Right to Play.
Last week we partnered with the Edmonton Valley Zoo and Project: Play to set up an opportunity for PLAY on Family Day! Families participated in a loose parts station with creative options to build, construct and imagine. There were various materials available in the Plaza space at the Zoo, both fabricated and natural elements, allowing the PAW team to facilitate play of all types. This was great practice for us as we will be organizing and implementing large scale public playdays in-country and it also gave us an opportunity to promote play here at home. A playful way to start reading week! This coming week we are planning more language practice, intercultural competency awareness and more fundraisers! The team has been busy learning about free play and how to plan a public playday. We were fortunate to have a visit from Taylor Seal & Joel Johnston (PAW alumni and Program Management Committee Playday Chairs) to lead us through a planning session. We learned about facilitating child-directed play and how to turn a simple place into a creative space, full of possibilities for children and families to explore. We will be facilitating Family Day play activities at the Edmonton Valley Zoo on February 19th, along with many other activities and programs run by the Zoo organizers and other guests. It should be an amazing day of building with loose parts, taking in the animal talks, participating in snow sculptures, and more! We hope you are able to join us! These playdays provide a wonderful opportunity for us to put play theory into practice and contribute here at home!
We also welcomed guests this week at our regular meeting to talk about culture, creating a respectful positive space to learn about history, religion, economics and personal experiences in the various cities/countries. Brooke (Cambodia leader) guided us through a thoughtful session on Intercultural Communication and we also enjoyed practicing Spanish and Khmer as each team led a game activity in their respective language. So much to learn!
Hello from PAW Team 2018 -we are a small but mighty team preparing for our service-learning experience in Cusco, Peru and Phnom Penh, Cambodia.We have been busy in our weekly preparation classes to embark on a learning adventure, in community service, to advocate for every Child's Right to Play (UNCRC).
Our sessions focus on a variety of topics as we gather in the interdisciplinary PAW learning community. Recently we have been talking about how to adapt physical activities and play for children of all abilities. We have challenged our assumptions about disability, critically thought about our attitudes and experiences, and engaged in meaningful dialogue. We have explored potential practical scenarios from Peru and Cambodia, as inspired by the leadership team's real-world experience (thanks Alex and Brooke). Together as a team, we created positive and creative solutions to modify activities for a number of contexts which could enable optimal participation in play for all children. While there will undoubtedly be some upcoming challenges that will be difficult to plan for, we have begun the conversation, and continue to work through how to be inclusive in a community service-learning context in cultures different than our own.
In another session, we explored the topic of Global Citizenship. Alex (Peru leader) guided us through some thought-provoking interactive activities to challenge us to remain curious, stay open and consider multiple perspectives. We know we will keep evolving as Global Citizens here at home, when we are immersed in-country this summer, and continue this journey for a lifetime.
