Spread the joy of play!

I started my journey with Play Around the World in 2008, my first year of University, through PlayDays.  I maintained a relationship with the program through these days throughout the year, and that introduced me to the importance and excitement of play in a child's life, which lead to my applying to the program in 2011.

in 2011, I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of twelve students who went to Southeast Asia to provide recreation, play and sport programming to children of all abilities at various organizations in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

This program changed me in ways that will last a lifetime.  I have an awareness and understanding of different ways of life as a result of Play Around the World and the course of my life has changed as a result of my experience.

This year, I have been fortunate enough to be given a position as a leader of the Phnom Penh team, where I will be guiding four new students through their own journey for three months this summer.

The impact this program has made on me has been exponential, and I ask that you please take the time to support the Play Around the World 2014 team by donating to the program, and passing along the message of this program, as it will allow life-changing experiences to happen for more students.

Help me share my love for play, learning and growth with my team and the children in Southeast Asia and Northern Canada by donating to our program and spreading the word!

“Delivering play in a developing nation made me realize how much I do believe in the power of play and its role in development for children”.  – Jenny Quilty (Team 2010)

People of all ages and across all cultures experience play. It is an important activity that children use to learn about their world. Play is recognized as a human right by the United Nations and we believe that play is essential to children’s growth and development as it awakens the joyful, creative spirit in us all.

Play Around the World (PAW) is a service learning course offered by the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation.

This year Play Around the World is fundraising to send 14 students to Thailand, Cambodia and Northern Canada to play with children and youth of all abilities.  These students volunteer approximately 35 hours per week for 12 weeks where they gain valuable life skills.
During this time, students also broaden their worldview as they live, learn and work in a culture different from their own. Funds raised will directly benefit the agencies PAW serves.

Play Around the World students volunteer with over 18 partner organizations, which include schools, orphanages, community organizations and government agencies to deliver play, recreation, physical activity and sport to children and youth.

Some of our organizational partners have expressed how excited they are to meet this years students!

Play Around the World Team 2014 Update
The PAW Team has been busy during their campaign with preparations for their sojourn in May (2 teams to Thailand, 1 Team to Cambodia and 1 team to NWT). They have been practising Play Leadership as they delivered a large scale playday at the City of Edmonton Churchill Square Family Day with over 5000 people visiting their Olympic themed outdoor stations in the square. The PAW team has also been learning while serving in a local school for children with impairments leading play activities in the classrooms. More preparations include weekly guest speakers for inter-cultural discussions, language, and adapted physical activity. Journalling accompanies the learning and serves as a reflective tool for new insights and new questions. The team has still had time for fundraising initiatives such as a chilli lunch in Occupational therapy, local Yoga Studio support, a Thai dinner, dance nights, and more!

The PAW 2014 team is excited to be embarking on this journey and our partners around the world anticipate their arrival.
