Dec. 2 Giving Day: 24-hour satellite matching challenge

#UAlbertaGivingDay

A University of Alberta student team has designed and plans to build and launch Alberta’s first satellite.  Last spring, they crowdfunded over $36,000 towards the satellite's launch fee. That very successful campaign bought their ticket on the rocket! Now they need to build it.

On December 2, we will be raising as much as we can for the project in 24 hours.
All donations will be matched, up to a total of $50,000, by an anonymous donor.

This is an out-of-your world opportunity to support research and discovery at the University of Alberta! We need your help to let people know about the matching challenge. Together, we can accomplish a lot in 24 hours.

Share the challenge with your friends, family and coworkers!

About the Satellite

AlbertaSat, a group of science and engineering students and faculty at the University of Alberta, have come together to design, build, test, launch and operate satellites. Their work supports a local commercial space industry and global space education.

Their first project is Alberta’s first cube satellite, the Experimental Albertan #1 Satellite, also known as the Ex-Alta 1.

The Ex-Alta 1 satellite will study the lower thermosphere and the effects and mechanics of space weather. Its design has been formally approved. The project will participate in an international swarm-satellite mission involving 50 cube satellites, launching in 2016 from Brazil.

While space weather is responsible for the beautiful and mysterious phenomenon known as the Northern Lights, it can also impact our global economy, culture and infrastructure. In extreme situations, space weather can result in damaging effects to infrastructure such as electrical power grids, which may cost us billions of dollars.

Please note: We can only provide the rewards listed if we raise all the funds required to build and launch the satellite. All monetary amounts are provided as donations to the University of Alberta. A donation to the project does not guarantee the successful launch or flight of the Ex-Alta 1 cube satellite. In the event that the satellite is unable to launch, all donations in support of the satellite project will be distributed to the Faculty of Science.

Five Reasons at 5:00 to support these students

Published on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014 at 11:59 PM (MST)

It’s five o’clock and it’s quitting time. But while the traditional work day is over, there are still several hours left in the 24-hour matching gift challenge!

In honour of the five o’clock hour, here are five reasons to support the student satellite team:
  • Double your dollars - an anonymous donor will match all donations to a total of $50,000
  • You can send someone to space! For gifts of $100 or more, the student team will engrave a name on a chip that will go up with the satellite.
  • SPACE!! Space!! Space!! We’re going to space!
  • Today is Giving Day, a national celebration of generosity. Be generous! You know you are.
  • Students! You are supporting ambitious UAlberta students, learning by doing at this great research-intensive school.
